All guests are catching limits of walleye in no time and some over 28 inches have already been caught. Lake Manitoba shiners and Berkley power baits are all working great. Boat launches are all in excellent conditions and the water levels remain at a perfect level. Early indications look like we are in for another world class fishing season!!

We are very honoured and privelaged to host on an up-coming spring black bear hunt, the one and only, Mr. Larry Weishuhn. Mr. Weishuhn will be filming his 2012 spring black bear hunt for the debut of his new hunting show; “Trailing the Hunter’s Moon” which is set to start in the spring/summer of 2013 (we will have more details on this as they become available). Accompanying Mr. Weishuhn, is our good friend and avid bear hunter; Mr. Bob Kaleta of Zeiss Optics. We will post reviews on their hunts this summer on our “Agassiz News” and “Hunting Reviews. You can also listen to live daily radio updates from our lodge with Jim and Trav from “The Revolution” just by going to our home page and clicking on their logo which is linked to their site. These hunts will take place the week of May 21-26.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – (OTTAWA — April 5, 2012) Good riddance to the long-gun registry — possibly the most unfair and useless legislation ever to have been passed by Parliament of Canada.

In the wake of many hours of debate and anti-gun rhetoric from the opposition and lobbyists, the Conservative party has successfully laid the registry to rest with Royal Assent on Bill C-19. Few issues have prompted so many Canadians to sound off on the shortcomings of a Canadian law.

“The Firearms Act has been a thorn in the side of hunters, sport shooters, farmers and heritage firearms enthusiasts for 17 years,” says Tony Bernardo of the Canadian Shooting Sport Association. “We know the registry was a cheap political ploy from a previous government that pretended to keep Canadians safe. It wasn’t gun control, and it wasn’t designed to do anything but frustrate honest, law-abiding firearms owners.”

The Senate of Canada passed 3rd reading of Bill C-19 to scrap the registry on April 4th. Meanwhile, the Government of Quebec has vowed an injunction to try to prevent the data from being destroyed so it can be turned over to the province.

“Quebec wouldn’t know what to do with this data if they got it,” says Bernardo. “The data is legendary for its inaccuracy and it’s way beyond its stale date. Quebec couldn’t build a workable registry from the dregs of this white elephant because it was never workable in the first place. It’s hard to believe that Quebec voters want their tax dollars fed into a paper shredder like this.”

The demise of the registry is the result of a coordinated effort by firearms enthusiasts, wildlife federations and associations from across the country. The Conservative party campaigned on scrapping the registry and its recent majority provides evidence of the widespread appetite for getting rid of this offensive legislation.

“It’s been a long, rough road, but we knew we could prevail if we just kept telling the truth,” says Bernardo. “The anti-gun faction had to torque statistics and align themselves with the unions and politically motivated left-wing advocates. Freedom from draconian laws should never be about the left vs. the right, or rural vs. urban interests. Freedom is always about telling the truth. We thank the Harper government and those who have worked tirelessly to put this legislative mess out to pasture.”

Once again, and as always, our waterfowl hunters experienced “World Class” Waterfowl hunting at its best!! Although the fall was extremely warm (breaking records for Hi’s during the days) and the migration way behind, the snow and Canada geese along with teal, redheads and canvasbacks made for some great shoots! The mallards were very late this year and I think the mallard numbers are way down too due to bad spring flooding and a late winter snow storm on May 1st that dumped over 2 feet of snow, nonetheless, hunters still had some awesome mallard shoots towards the end.

This fall, we limited out on either greater or lesser Canada geese every morning except for 2 mornings and that is over a 6 week season. We even had groups of up to 10 limiting out on Canada geese three mornings in a row!!!

The first week of our season, we had the pleasure once again to hunt with a variety of good friends/hunters in the likes of Ted & Bud Burger (Founders of Burger Brothers Sporting Goods), Jim Crowley of Hook and Hunt TV and repeat hunters and good friends for 15 years, Jeff & Duane from Minnesota, and what a week it was!! My youngest son Jordan was thrown out in the field with the Crowley/Ohman party and great bird hunting was done by all! Also that night, the teal hunting was so good, I had my youngest son Jordan take our “New” and youngest lab “Henry” out to get a feel for it with Jim of Hook & Hunt TV. Let’s just say, “Henry” needs a lot of training still, ha ha! Like I’ve always said Jordan, those young legs were “made for walking and that’s just what they’ll do”, LOL!!!

As temperatures remained hot, surprisingly the waterfowl hunting remained awesome!! Limits of geese/ducks kept coming back to our main lodge and if limits of ducks weren’t had in the mornings, the divers out on the river made up for it in the evenings. Although a lot of divers remained to the North, many were down and made for some awesome hunts. By September 30th, some cold weather was finally in store and by October 1st, divers really started to come down along with more geese! Not only was the waterfowl hunting great, walleye fishing on both rivers heated up and anglers were catching limits in record time. A lot more “Master Angler” (MA) walleye were caught/released in this world class fishery!

By October 4th, snow geese littered the fields and the migration really started to heat up. Redheads were down by the thousands and this kept the bird hunting excellent for the rest of the season.

Despite our extremely warm fall, hunters/guests still saw “World Class” Waterfowl Hunting at its best! Major scouting is a big factor in successful bird hunts and many miles had to be put on by all, but paid off big time! I have heard over the years from a lot of hunters that have been to other operations that scouts won’t go further than 10-20 miles looking for birds. We don’t care and will drive were we have to, too get great shoots. Sometimes 5 miles, other mornings 30-60 miles. If it means getting up an extra ½ hour, who cares, you have to be were the birds are!

Thank you to all the farmers around Dauphin & Ste. Rose for letting us hunt your land as always, much appreciated by all!! Last but not least, thank you to my Dad and both sons for being a big part of our success this past fall with all your hard work out in the fields and around the lodge!

Happy Hunting,

Rick

Agassiz Outfitters

*As always, some great feasts of waterfowl stir fry’s and fresh walleye were had by all guests in our main lodge, and it doesn’t get any better than that!!*
